As the third edition of the Cabo Verde PWA World Cup quickly approaches the excitement and anxiety builds worldwide. Top athletes are sweating it out, waiting for one of the coveted positions in what is one of the world’s most prestigious wave event. Others wonder if their year of training will put them up to par with the likes of Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde / Mormaii / MFC), Josh Angulo (Maui Sails / Dakine) and Jason Polakow (JP / NeilPryde). The world’s top windsurfing journalists prepare their travels and most of all, host island Sal prepares for what will be the biggest international event in the country of Cabo Verde to date.

Local representative, Josh Angulo, had this to say “This year should be a big surprise to everyone. The country has come together and built a solid team in hopes of creating a very festive atmosphere at the event, which will include an activities tent with international and national live music, nightly dj’s, food, drinks and the national beach football championships. On top of that we’ve had our windiest winter to date and some good swells so everything is on track for a successful event.”

The 2009 Cabo Verde PWA World Cup event organizer, Cabo Verde Investments along with their local advisor, Josh Angulo, have come to decisions on who will receive the organizer wildcards. Three of the four wildcards have gone to local hotshots Mitu Monteiro, Djo Silva and Titik Lopes with the last remaining slot being given to windsurfing legend Francisco Goya.

Event spokesman Josh Angulo commented on the choice “Seeing all the requests for wildcards coming in from abroad both to the organizers and the PWA, I certainly wouldn’t want to be in the position of the PWA board members in having to choose the 4 remaining slots. On our side the decision was relatively easy as Djo, Mitu and Titik are the 3 hottest local guys and we by all means will continue to invest in and push our local youth.

The decision to issue Francisco a wildcard was also an easy choice. Francisco, a World Champion, proven Ponta Preta ripper and windsurf legend, he was the first international sailor on our wildcard list and as a country and event we await his presence and look forward to him once again bringing his incomparable style to Ponta Preta. Welcome Francisco!”

A formal announcement of the four remaining wildcard places, which will be selected by the PWA’s board, will be made by the association shortly. In the mean time, you can stay up to date with news from the Cabo Verde World Cup by tuning into the event’s official website, HERE.
