The Bol d’Or

1 AV 4

When the gun signalled the 10:00 start of the 71st edition of the Bol d’Or yesterday morning there was barely a zephyr. By lunchtime the monohull fleet had barely moved, while the multihulls – including the two Alinghi D35s – were just a third of the way up the length of the lake getting the most out of the 0 to 4knots of breeze. By nightfall, the D35 fleet had just rounded the halfway mark at Le Bouveret and it wasn’t until dawn that the first boat crossed the finish line. Congratulations go to Alain Gautier and Michel Desjoyeaux on Foncia, the two French offshore sailors and their crew crossed the line at 05:33 this morning after racing for 19hours 33mins and 26 seconds to win the Bol d’Or. Gautier’s win was played out in the last few moments of the race as hot on their heels, just 1min10secs, behind came SmartHome, followed by Okalys-Corum, Zen Too, Julius Baer and Banque Populaire. GSMN Genolier was second overall, and first of the M2 class. Alinghi SUI1, helmed by Ernesto Bertarelli crossed the line after 20hours 34mins and 15 seconds, coming 6th in class, while Alinghi SUI6, helmed by Ed Baird, crossed the line after 21hours 36mins and 56secs to rank 9th. This edition stands as one of the longest in the event's 71 year history and at the time of writing boats are still crossing the finish line now 25 hours into the race…
